International. ASHRAE reported that it has added time for non-native English speakers by taking certification exams, following member requirements and careful research by the Certification Committee.
ASHRAE is adding 30 minutes to the test time for the six certification exams, at the request of those who have applied and declare that they are native English speakers. This opportunity began on April 1st.
In addition, from April 1 to December 31, those who have not passed the exam and are non-native English speakers on one or more of the six certifications can apply to retake the exam for once per type at no cost.
The most recent suggestion to extend the review came from the Colombia Chapter made through a motion presented at the Regional Conference of Chapters of Region XII. The petition was approved following an investigation and in consideration that the Certification Committee wishes to ensure compliance with the International Organization for Standardization ISO / International Electrotechnical Commission IEC 17024:2012. The ASHRAE High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certification received accreditation in 2015 from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the 17024 standard.
"I am very grateful to everyone who contributed to the recent addition of 30 minutes for non-native English speakers," said Shanta Tucker, director of the Certification Committee. "As principal, I am pleased to receive this request from our members and for their enthusiasm for the Publications and Education Council to approve this significant change. The process of making a meaningful shift to standard certification programs is a wonderful example of ASHRAE's commitment to its members and those who support it globally."
Ross Montgomery, who was vice chairman of the Board of Directors and who has been heavily involved in the Society's certification process, agreed.
"This extension of time on the certification exam for non-Native English speakers is a good commitment after many years of considering something fairer and beyond illustrates ASHRAE's commitment to its strategic plan objectives," he added.
"I consider this to be a great opportunity for all of us who are not native English speakers and we must take advantage of it, especially in a globalized world. All ASHRAE members should have at least one certification," said Gerardo Alfonso, a member of the Electronic Communications Committee and the Colombia Chapter.
