International. Comparing the energy demand of heat pumps with the best available alternative – gas condensing boilers – would lead to an increase in energy demand. All heat pumps installed in 2014 have saved 10.42 TWh of final energy and 4.7 TWh of primary energy.
According to an analysis by Ehpa (European Heat Pump Association), the stock of heat pump units in operation across Europe in 2014 saved 109.31 TWh of final energy and 51.7 TWh of primary energy. For comparison: In 2012, Germany produced 46 TWh of electricity from wind.
If heat pumps can save energy, they can also save on emissions. Based on 2014 sales volume, 2.09 million tons of CO2 emissions were avoided. the total population of the installed heat pumps saved 22.07 million tons of CO2 emissions. This is almost the amount of CO2 emitted by Croatia in 2010 (20.9 million tonnes).
