International. Container shipping company Maersk Line confirmed that it added a total of 12,900 Carrier Transicold PrimeLINE container refrigeration units to its fleet.
Carrier confirmed that the order is one of the largest ever placed for PrimeLINE units. The units are being installed in 40-foot-high bucket containers for the replacement and expansion of Maersk's fleet of reefer containers.
With the implementation of this equipment, Maersk Line expects to reach its 2020 goal to improve carbon dioxide efficiency by 60%, relative to a 2007 baseline.
Maersk Line's PrimeLINE units, in normal operating modes, expect to save enough energy over their lifetime to eliminate more than 1.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions relative to the industry average. That's equivalent to taking nearly 27,000 cars off the road in the same period.
"Over the course of a relationship spanning nearly three decades, Carrier and Maersk have worked together to make significant strides in reducing onboard energy consumption, while reducing emissions," said David Appel, president of Carrier Transicold and Refrigeration. "With the addition of these PrimeLINE units to its fleet, Maersk Line continues to advance its bold sustainability initiatives."
