International. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) made official the publication of the new version of the international standard ISO 14001, a benchmark standard for environmental management worldwide. The standard is used by all types of companies and entities, in more than 300,000 organizations, both public and private, which apply it in 171 countries.
To carry out this transition, certified companies have three years, that is, in September 2018 they will have to have made the transition successfully and be certified under the new ISO 14001 2015, otherwise they will lose their certificate since the old one will lack validity.
In summary, some of the improvements that the ISO 14001 2015 standard has undergone are these:
- The alignment with the strategy that the organization wants to follow is increased.
- An improvement in environmental protection, with special emphasis on proactive activities.
- Improve communication thanks to the communication strategy, which is much more effective.
- The concept of life cycle is implemented so you must know all the stages that a product carries out, from "born" to "dies".
The main objective pursued with the revision of ISO 14001 is to make it much easier to integrate the Environmental Management System with others, such as the Quality Management System, the Information Security System, etc. This change was made because organizations demanded it more and more. The new structure means accessibility for all organizations, especially for the service sector.
The ISO 14001 2015 standard, brings with it new requirements, such as a high protection of the environment, it will be necessary to carry out practices to prevent pollution and the sustainable use of natural resources, the environmental variable is considered as something strategic to carry out the management within the company, senior management must be involved in the leadership of the Environmental Management System, a life cycle analysis will have to be carried out, and most importantly the information to be transmitted must be transparent, truthful and understandable to all members of the organisation and interested persons.
