Chile. A renewal in the implementation of demonstration pilot projects in energy efficiency was carried out by the wine company Miguel Torres.
The link with the Chilean Energy Efficiency Agency was born from the initiative of Miguel Torres to look for alternatives to be more energy efficient and to reduce the impact of the carbon footprint of its production process, in order to be more sustainable and friendly to the environment. With the agency's support, they detected that the boiler-controlled hot water system presented an opportunity for replacement to more efficient technologies.
Prior to the energy efficiency measure implemented, the boilers only used Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to heat the water from the wine storage process in 50 m3 vats, and the washing and sanitization of the same.
The Energy Efficiency measure implemented consists of a technological replacement, that is, it replaces the old boilers that use LPG, those that operated with yields of 75%, with Biomass boilers (pellets) with a yield of 88%.
This change of technology and fuel meant a significant cost reduction for the company, since LPG is more expensive than the alternative fuel used. In addition, being an industry that regularly prunes its plantations, it would generate the opportunity to self-supply energy.
