Europe. With a total of 644 votes in favor and 19 against, the European Parliament recently approved that from 2025 the sale of air conditioning and refrigeration systems containing fluorinated gases will be banned in the European Union.
The regulation now emphasizes that the use of HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons), which emit greenhouse gases, must decrease by about 80% by 2030. The European Union highlights that this type of gases can generate global warming about 23,000 times greater than what CO2 does.
"This EU breakthrough sets the tone for a global phase-out of these 'super greenhouse gases', which would otherwise increase emissions by 20% by 2030. Emissions of fluorinated gases have increased by 60% since 1990 in the EU. With the ban on its use in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, it is urgent to reverse this trend," said Dutch MEP Bas Eickhout, of the Green Group, in information published by the newspaper lainformacion.com.
The ban by 2025 reaches commercial refrigeration equipment with a power of 40 kilowatts, air conditioning equipment that uses HFCs with a GWP 750 greater than CO2.
