Chile. The Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile (Asoex) developed a "Guide to the Use and Management of Ammonia in the Refrigeration of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Emergency Plan", which seeks to protect and care for employees who work with this gas in the agricultural sector.
Among some of the most important recommendations highlighted in the guide are the use of personal protective equipment for routine preventive maintenance checkups such as a helmet, full face mask with ammonia filter, chemical-resistant boots and gloves, personal protective equipment to use in case of leaks, spills or emergencies, among other things.
In addition, the facilities must have the following elements: abundant water, wind direction indicators, excess flow and overpressure valves, temperature safety alarms, etc.
Similarly, the government participates in the so-called "Refrigeration Working Group", which aims to define standards that regulate all refrigeration processes in Chile, emphasizing greater training and monitoring to face emergencies.
