[USA] Although copper prices have not skyrocketed alarmingly, the theft of air conditioners has increased. As a result, this can become a very long summer for the Northern Hemisphere, as many owners of these devices in the United States are losing them.
It's a big problem," said Frank Spivey of Spivey Construction, located in South Indianapolis who experienced the theft of these units in his business, as did the businesses of many of his neighbors. What impresses the authorities is the fact that most of these thieves illegally release the refrigerant into the atmosphere even up to 150 tons of R-22.
"The government should do something, establishing tougher policies with thieves. There should be some kind of regulation that diminishes the capacity of action of these sellers of illegal material," he concluded. But ultimately, if copper prices remain at their current level the situation will remain the same or worsen; for many it will be a long summer.
