Catalan companies dedicated to the renewable energy sector reduced their jobs by 3% during 2010, leaving the total number of employees at 10,000 – 6,150 direct jobs and approximately 3,600 induced jobs – according to the annual study carried out by CC.OO.
The data, extracted from a survey of 190 companies in the sector, indicate that although the number of companies has grown, the crisis has affected employment, although to a much lesser extent than in other sectors and focused mainly on companies related to technical and project aspects and not so much with the maintenance and construction of infrastructures.
Specifically, the report specifies that 40% of companies kept their jobs, another 40% experienced a decrease in hiring and only 6% experienced "strong growth".
The number of companies dedicated to solar energy – both photovoltaic and thermal – in Catalonia continues to be the most numerous, while biomass companies have overtaken wind as the third with the largest number of firms.
In Catalonia, more than half of the jobs related to renewable energies are focused on solar energy, while wind energy encompasses only 19% of jobs compared to 44.6% of the whole of Spain, something that the CC.OO report. blames the delay in the deployment of this energy in Catalan territory.
In any case, the study suggests that the improvement of the economy and the promotion of this type of energy make the renewable sector a bet with "great potential for the future", since as foreseen in the Energy Plan of Catalonia for 2015, electricity generation from biomass should reach 50 megawatts compared to the current 0.5, and solar thermal, 202 megawatts, among other examples.
