The city of San Francisco, one of the greenest cities in the world, has just voted to ban the marketing of unhealthy foods for children. Specifically, McDonadld's Happy Meal and other similar toy-based promotions have been banned to sell foods that have been shown to lead to childhood obesity. The law requires that foods meet certain nutritional standards before they can be sold with toys. San Francisco is the first major city to pass such a law and its impact will likely be widely felt. This law will enter into force on December 1, 2011.
Opponents of the law include the National Restaurant Association and McDonald's Corp, which used its now-popular Happy Meal as a pioneer in the use of toys in the market aimed directly at children.
