United States. In Cupertino, California, plans are underway to build what would be the world's largest green roof, which would consist of an area that would encompass twelve hectares of green areas and a 6.1-kilometer circulation network that will connect orchards, vineyards, an amphitheater and play areas.
The project was proposed by renowned designer Rafael Viñoly and is called "The Hills at Vallco". Vallco is an area occupied by a former shopping mall in Cupertino. The goal is to create a private neighborhood of 15 blocks with 58,064 square meters of commercial space, 185,806 square meters of offices and 800 residential units.
All of these buildings would be covered by an undulating, walkable green blanket that would pass overhead. The blanket would include services of orchards and vineyards, parks to play and routes with trails to travel it.
The project will be discussed by the community over the next eight months to be approved, meanwhile, the project's investors intend to obtain LEED Platinum certification as soon as construction is completed.
