United States. The New York government will invest $450 million in a plan called Build Smart NY for public buildings that seeks to improve energy efficiency and help the environment.
The first buildings intervened will be the least efficient. They will receive improvements in their air conditioning systems, LED lighting, automation, among others.
New York has more than 20,810 square meters of real estate, including hospitals, universities, prisons, corporate buildings, which consume about 3,000 GWh annually, equivalent to 5% of the energy consumed by buildings throughout the state.
According to the website energias-renovables.com, a total of six state entities represent 92% of the state's energy bill: the State University of New York, the Department of Correctional Services, the City University of New York, the Office of General Services, the Office of Mental Health and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
