International. The use of efficient technologies for water heating could generate savings close to US $ 18,000 million, revealed a study conducted by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).
According to the organization, new technologies and practices focused on energy efficiency of water heaters allow buildings, both commercial and residential, to use approximately 37% less electricity, which is reflected in a saving of almost US $ 18 billion in this area.
Typically, the use of water heaters is the second-largest cause of energy expenditure in residential buildings, behind only heating and cooling expenditure, ACEEE explained. To reach this conclusion, the study evaluated products and services ranging from high-efficiency heat pumps and water heaters, to maintenance best practices in multifamily buildings.
"The technologies we evaluated represent a sea change in the way we think about water heating," said Harvey Sachs, lead author at ACEEE, who added that "consumers can now choose from many pieces of equipment, such as sophisticated tanks, tanks and solar water heating systems, to meet their needs."
