Chile. Due to the high temperatures that have been recorded in recent days in the Chilean capital, the Santiago Metro implemented measures aimed at reinforcing the ventilation of its facilities.
Due to the entry into operation in 2007 of the Transantiago, the frequency with which these trains travel in the central part of Line 1 (between Central Station and Tobalaba) and the number of passengers in that specific part of the Metro, the temperature in that section has increased.
The company put into operation mega fans and fans with nebulizers located on the platforms of the road; both those already existing in the Los Héroes, La Moneda, Universidad de Chile and Tobalaba stations were lit, as well as those recently installed in the Baquedano and Santa Lucía stations.
With those of the last two stations there are 32 mega fans that are added to the air conditioning system of the mass transport company of the Chilean capital, 16 in each station.
Each device has a diameter of 1.2 meters and are grouped into panels, which allow to reduce the temperature between 3º and 5º Celsius on working days, at peak hours.
According to Roberto Bianchi, general manager of the Metro, the changes that benefit ventilation do not stop.
At the end of October, the replacement of the fixed doors that interconnect the trains that travel on lines 2 and 5 (which are the oldest), through doors with bars, is expected to be completed to allow better air flow.
Likewise, in mid-2012, 108 new cars will come into operation on Line 1 that will include air conditioning.
