Canada. Dunbarton High School of Pickering located in Ontario, Canada, was selected as the "Greenest School on Earth" in 2014, based on the results of the annual competition organized by the Center for Green Schools of the Green Building Council of the United States. (Usgbc).
Dunbarton High School, built in the 1960s, has undergone significant modification over the past five years, installing new energy-efficient windows, insulation and low-power lighting. The school offers a high level of environmental training and engages students through courses and extracurricular activities related to the school's natural environment.
Additionally, Dunbarton has an outdoor classroom for 40 students, a 500-square-meter pollinator garden, and a rooftop solar water heater. Students at the school are provided with stainless steel water bottles upon enrollment and participate in projects such as organic waste disposal and the Atlantic salmon restoration program. The school plans to use the $1,000 prize to develop a school garden and build ten additional bee condominiums, which will be shared with the local community.
