United States. Honeywell partnered with distributors and contractors to collect thermostats nationwide to support Thermostat Recycling Corp.'s (TRC) efforts to recover and dispose of mercury thermostats.
The CRT effort recovered nearly a ton of mercury according to a 2011-2012 progress report, and since 2002 they have recovered nearly seven tons of mercury.
"This is especially noticeable when you consider that most states do not have mercury thermostat removal bans. We count on partners like Honeywell to encourage HVAC contractors to voluntarily participate in the program. It is important that thermostats are properly arranged in order to keep mercury out of landfills," said TRC Executive Director Mark Tibbetts.
HVAC companies, distributors, and contractors interested in participating in the recycling program can visit TRC's website, www.thermostat-recycle.org.
