Chile. The first 110MW solar thermal plant will be built after the signing of the contract by the Spanish consortium Acciona and Abengoa, and will be located in the Cerro Dominador complex, in the town of María Elena, in the Atacama Desert, in the Antofagasta Region.
Aciona will build the plant and Abengoa will supply the technology for a project that calls itself the first in Latin America.
The solar thermal tower plant will be added to the 100 MW photovoltaic plant already in operation, built by Abengoa and which has been in commercial operation since February 2018, to form a renewable energy complex with a total capacity of 210 MW and the first to combine both technologies throughout the continent.
This project will generate clean energy in a manageable way for 24 hours and will have a thermal storage capacity in molten salts of 17.5 hours. The solar field, of 146 hectares, has 10,600 heliostats that will direct solar radiation to a receiver located 252 meters high.
The solar thermal plant to be built by Acciona and Abengoa will produce clean energy that will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 640,000 tons of CO2 per year. In total, the complex will avoid 870,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and supply clean energy through 15-year power purchase agreements with distribution companies, signed in 2014.
